  41. The dune2patch and ail drivers do not work correctly on my machine.  I
  42. follow all the steps but when I play the game, it searches on my and b
  43. floppies while it says initiallizing MT-32, and then quits saying not
  44. enough memory.  I am sure I have enough memory though.

  55. The only time I ever get the out of memory error is if I don't load ultramid
  56. high. So try loading both your mouse and ultramid high if you can.

  58. this sucks, since I normall load my CD-ROM drivers high, so I can't listen
  59. to some music while playing Dune 2. Ah well...

  95. Gravis operates.  It seems like they can't keep their records 
  96. straight.  Why should you assume my package is in the mail 
  97. when John Smith himself did NOT say that it was.  All he said 
  98. was that "all the packages" have been mailed out.  So what?  
  99. Does that include mine?  If so, why is it that I and a bunch 
  100. of other people still have not received their disks??  Oh, 
  101. sure, blame the postal service, but, quoting Francois Dion,

  114. Heavens, I haven't even gotten the new GM patches that Gravis 
  115. said they would send out to their customers and that was way 
  116. back in January or so.  Nada!  Zilch!

  120. 1.      John Smith, go to your "records."  Look, scan, peruse, 
  121. and study it and see if Gravis did or did not send out the 
  122. disks to ME, to Marc, to the three people that contacted 
  123. Francois, and to the God-knows-how-many others on the pissed 
  124. list.  Articulate in *NON-VAGUE* terms whether the disks have 
  125. been sent out to us.  If it was sent out, exactly WHAT DATE 
  126. were they sent out on and to WHICH ADDRESS?  Or maybe Gravis 
  127. does not keep a record of whom they sent out the disks to.  If 
  128. that is the case, SAY SO.
  129.  
  130. 2.      Send via e-mail uuencoded chunks of the software which 
  131. has been pkzip'd with a password that is identical to the 
  132. serial number of the GUS.  The user sends e-mail to John Smith 
  133. with the serial number of the user's GUS, name, and home 
  134. address (as additional verification).  Gravis then checks to 
  135. see if the information is correct (gosh, I sure hope they have 
  136. records bearing WHO has WHICH card) and forthwith sends the 
  137. uuencoded, zipped software to the user.  We are interested in 
  138. what is not already on epas such as Powerchords and Midisoft.
  139.  
  140. 3.      Request the postal service to trace the packages (that 
  141. is, *IF* indeed the disks have been sent to us).  But I bet 
  142. the postal service will only attempt to trace it if Gravis can 
  143. produce proof of their having sent a package to a particular 
  144. person in question.  Can Gravis produce such information??
  145.  
  146. 4.      Send the disks out _again_ to those who haven't 
  147. received them yet and whose package failed to be traced by the 
  148. postal service.
  149.  
  150. Bottom line: I WANT MY DISKS!!!!!!  And those of you who are 
  151. pissed like me, flame on!!!!!!  Maybe we should start a new 
  152. newsgroup called comp.gravis.good-service.not.

  166. One suggested to try only UMBdriver with it, but the version I have
  167. (does anyone have something newer than the one that was mentioned
  168. by the uploader then ? it's two years old !!)
  169. doesn't recognize my chipset (should have been 09 also I think).
  170. with ANY mem-managers, or just himem, it get's stuck right on
  171. the start. I did manage to get this (AWSOME !!!!!) game going
  172. using sbos120, and NO mem-manager at all, but it still warns
  173. it lacks 9KB.
  174. I used it with the defaults on the Ultrasound, and my machine
  175. is 386SX without anything fancy installed. X-wing, from the
  176. same company worked OK.

  179. so what did we gain ?

  193. Has anyone in Canada received the new (probably old by the time I finally see 
  194. them) disk set yet?  I bought my Ultrasound last November and have been
  195. patiently waiting for the General Midi pathces that were supposed to 
  196. follow.  I know these patches are available through ftp sites, but when
  197. I bought my GUS there was nothing on the box saying that internet access
  198. was part of the system requirements!!  
  199.  
  200. Gravis, if you really did mail the disks to Canada, maybe you should get
  201. after Canada Post to see what happened.  After all, you must of had too
  202. pay a fair bit of money to mail all those disk.  i don't know about you
  203. but when I give my money to a compay I expect to get service for it.
  204. Is there any way we can find out more about what happened to the disks?

  215. Well people, Canada Post just doesn't seem to be in the right gear.  I
  216. don't think all you people should be whining to Gravis about "wheres
  217. my disks".  Truth of the matter is, they're stuck in Canada Post.
  218. I've personally been "charged" on my credit card for a cable from
  219. Toshiba (that darned XM3301 or 3401 Audio cable) over 4 weeks ago, and
  220. lo and behold, I still haven't seen it in the mail.
  221.  
  222. So, better than bugging Gravis, write a letter to Canada Post and ask
  223. them why "parcels" seem to take "forever".  Or, "an unreasonable
  224. amount of time".  Since Toshiba is in the US, and I think the disks
  225. are mailed from the US, this would appear to make sense.

  253. Well, PC Expo was a very positive place for the GUS. Gravis' booth was quite
  254. popular, and IMHO the most informative, personable, and well thought-out
  255. booth of any of the sound card manufacturers (with Aztech Labs placing second
  256. (they make better (and cheaper) CL products than Creative Labs does), Media
  257. Vision a distant third, Creative Labs even further behind MVI, and Turtle
  258. Beach utterly in last for having the largest booth, with the least real
  259. information. (read: hype, glitz, and no substance; neither of the two boards
  260. (Tahiti and Maui) bragged about are available, and they may not be till near
  261. the end of the year)).

  263. Gravis' booth had a PC with a GUS in it hooked up to a Roland A-30 keyboard
  264. controller and a DrumKat drum controller, a machine running several of the
  265. Focal Point 3D demos (everything you've heard about the "Dentist" demo is
  266. true; it *hurts!*), two machines running games (one running Strike Commander
  267. with *native GUS support*, and the other running a large variety of games
  268. with SBOS (Flashback, Wolf3D, etc), and a machine running a MIDI comparision
  269. of the Sound Blaster 16 ASP and the GUS, a comparision that brought up
  270. comments from onlookers like "That's a CD, right?" about the Gravis, and
  271. quite a few chuckles about the beeps and bloops of the FM-synth based cards.
  272. Also visible at the booth were four different CD-ROM controller
  273. daughtercards, including three  proprietary cards (Sony & 2 others), and the
  274. SCSI daughterboard, along with the long-awaited MIDI connector box, which
  275. Brad Craig says will be available "very soon".  All in all, a very well done
  276. effort by Gravis.

  325. Someone was talking about Origin FX for Windows....
  326.  
  327. Origin FX uses a relatively new development, the AIL drivers for Windows. I
  328. have not got a clue as to whether the GUS will be supported under these
  329. WinAIL drivers, but it shouldn't be too big of a concern, because you have to
  330. be out of your fucking mind to use them in your Windows program, and not too
  331. many companies are *that* stupid. Origin apparently was an exception for this
  332. piece of grub-ware (software designed solely for the purpose of extracting
  333. money from customers). All that's necessary to support sound & music under
  334. Windows is to use the MCI calls built into Windows. OriginFX is way up there
  335. on the "most inanely programmed software" list for all time.
  336.  
  337. Secondly, *SBOS does NOT work AT ALL under Windows, period.*

  362. To the unfortunate soul who can't get Syndicate to work properly:

  364. 1) Have hope, my copy works just dandy... details in a minute.
  365. 2) Someone put a program called GUS_SYND on the archive which is
  366.    supposed to fix the problem.  But I didn't need it...

  368. First, my system configuration.

  370. generic 386/SX-25, 4 MB RAM, plenty o' HD, Trident SVGA, GUS w/256K (sigh)
  371. QEMM 6, Stacker 2 (yes it works... the "drive compression not supported"
  372. bit is B.S.), Super PC-Kwik (this works too, once I managed to get it to
  373. lend out enough EMS memory), and miscellaneous TSRs.

  375. I have my GUS set up for SBOS as IRQ 7 and DMA 1 (always). Base port 0x220.
  376.  
  377. If you look at the SYND.BAT file, it looks like this:

  381. All I had to do was to eliminate the /iio option from the command line, and
  382. SBOS 2.0B8 works for me.  (I stay away from 9 and 10 because they give
  383. random, unrepeatable lockups on my box.)

  385. I also had to get Super PC-Kwik to lend enough EMS memory for Syndicate not
  386. to crash.  It needs at least 2,816K (I'm not sure about the full 3 megs),
  387. by my experience.

  389. Worked fine on my Stacked, cached drive.  I think the compression disclaimer
  390. is just a warning.  After my experience with SuperStor (what do you mean, I
  391. can't restore the drive structure?), I trust Stacker implicitly... never had
  392. any problems.

  407. Quarterdeck is testing a setup that uses a GUS for playing 
  408. music-on-hold direct from disk.  Our telephone system wizard, 
  409. Dave Haber, has got some initial samples recorded for both music 
  410. and voice announcements playing in a cyclic batch-file into the 
  411. music-on-hold system right now.  With a little help from the 
  412. SDK, he's putting together an application which will control the 
  413. timing of each music piece, voice announcements, and so on, 
  414. picking randomly different pieces of either sampled or MIDI 
  415. music to play.  Initial tests show that 11Mhz mono sounds GREAT 
  416. over the phone, better than a plain analog tape recording.  The 
  417. first movement of Eine Kliene Nachtmusik takes a little over 4Mb 
  418. disk space at that sample rate.
  419.  
  420. I'd appreciate it if I could get some Qool MIDI songs, or 
  421. pointers to the location of same.  Maybe even some MOD files 
  422. would be appropriate.

  451. reorganization of the Ultrasound Internet Archives. Sorry for the
  452. delays. There were last minute changes to the documentation and the
  453. features of the mailserver.... yes, I did say mailserver! 8)

  457. First of all, notice that we are no longer the "Ultrasound FTP Sites". We
  458. have now been renamed to the "Gravis Ultrasound Internet Archives". We
  459. have grown beyond the limits of ftp and continue to be on the grow.
  460. Look for more good things to come from the folks who brought you the GUS
  461. archive! 8)

  465. Several days ago, we have already gone ahead with the first phase of our
  466. change over. archive.epas.utoronto.ca is no longer a full archive. It
  467. will no longer hold sound files or the older versions of Gravis released
  468. files (ie. no longer an exact mirror of the Gravis BBS). But
  469. wuarchive.wustl.edu will continue to be a full archive with ALL the
  470. files available.

  491. Yes, thanks to Zeljko, we now also have a mailserver. And not just a
  492. simple FTP mailserver either. This is a full blown Ultrasound Archive
  493. mirror as well. Yes that's right, the mailserver is actually on another
  494. Ultrasound Archive Site. This makes file retrieval a lot faster (no
  495. ftping to another site needed), less complicated (no ftping to another
  496. site needed) and less chances of error (no ftping to another site
  497. needed).... 8)

  502. My full blown documentation on how to use the mailserver will be posted
  503. as my next message. But here are some sneak previews.... getting files
  504. can be as simple as a one line command, or as complicated as a ftp
  505. session. You don't need to specify the whole path (directory list of
  506. where the file is found). Simply specify the filename and the program
  507. will search out the file for you! Multiple levels of help with
  508. postscript versions of the help file available. There are other archives in
  509. this mailserver as well that you might be interested in. So get the
  510. index and have a look see.... and many more features that's described in
  511. the documentations.

  515. We are still on the grow. Look for more wonderful things to come in the
  516. future. As we were progressing through the current expansion, I was
  517. receiving emails from those who want to join our big family of
  518. Internet services in the future. (We may have to change our name once
  519. again from Ultrasound Internet Archives to ... Internet Services in the
  520. future!) I have received a number of plans and dreams people have and
  521. would like to contribute to our list of services. Of course they are

  590. Thanks to Zeljko, we now have a mailserver service for those who want to
  591. access our Ultrasound Internet Archives but doesn't have ftp access. If
  592. you've never used a mailserver before, the idea is to send a set of 
  593. instructions in an email to the mailserver, and the server will process
  594. and follow the instructions given. In most cases, you would tell it to
  595. send you a file and it would send you that file as an email. Detailed
  596. instructions to follow.

  598. Although this mailserver has the ability to access other sites using
  599. ftp, it is also a full Ultrasound Internet Archive in that it already
  600. has the collection of files in its own harddrives. So you can access the
  601. files directly from this archive which will not only be faster, but will
  602. also minimize the amount of resources used which is important since the
  603. archive recites in Germany. Please don't abuse the service or we will
  604. lose it.

  607. Archive Structure:
  608. ------------------

  610. Even though our Ultrasound Internet Archive sites have different 
  611. pathnames for the root directory of our archive, the directory
  612. structures under each root directory is the same. And the same can be
  613. said about this mailserver archive.
  614.  
  615. The root directory for this Ultrasound archive is simply "gus".
  616. Therefore, the full pathname of a file under this archive is
  617. "gus/<directories>/<filename>". 
  618.  
  619. For example, to get Gravis' patch file named "gus0007.zip" under the
  620. directory ".../gravis/patch", the full pathname is
  621. "gus/gravis/patch/gus0007.zip". 
  622.  
  623. Notice that the "..."  stands for the root directory of the archive.
  624.  
  625. In most cases, you don't need to specify the full pathname. If the
  626. filename is unique, the mailserver has the ability to "search" for
  627. the file automatically so directory information is not needed. But
  628. if there is more than one file with the same name, then you must
  629. specify the full pathname.

  631. Steps In Requesting Files:
  632. --------------------------

  634. It is very simple to request a file from the mailserver. Simply....
  635.  
  636. - send an email to "mail-server@nike.rz.uni-konstanz.de"
  637. - have the word "begin" as the first line of the body of your email
  638. - ask the mailserver to send you a file with the following syntax
  639.   "send <filename>"
  640.   where <filename> is the name of the file you want to get
  641.   (note that if there are more than one file with the same filename,
  642.    then you must specify the whole path as described in the previous
  643.    section)
  644. - repeat above step of you have more files you want it to send
  645. - have the word "end" as the last line of your email
  646.

  651. file which is the complete listing of all the files in our archive.

  677. What To Do With File In Email:
  678.  -----------------------------

  680. Once the file you requested arrives in your mailbox, you will have to
  681. convert it back into it's original state. For those who've used email
  682. to get files before, skip to the next step.
  683.  
  684. The file will arrive as an UUENCODED file. Email can only transport
  685. text files. Therefore, binary files are converted into an encoded text
  686. file format called UUENCODE before it can be tranposted as an email.
  687. Once you get the file, you must convert it back to its original binary
  688. file format with UUDECODE as laid out below...
  689.  
  690. - save the email as a file and remember the name
  691. - if you are using a UNIX machine for your email messaging, you can either
  692.   decode the file on the UNIX box, and then transfer it to the PC already
  693.   in its binary format. Or you can transfer it to the PC as an encoded
  694.   file, then convert it on the PC. Since most UNIX comes with UUENCODE and
  695.   UUDECODE built-in, I'd recommend doing the decoding on the UNIX machine
  696.   first, then transfer it over to the PC in binary mode.
  697. - to decode the file in UNIX, type "uudecode <filename>"
  698.   where <filename> is the name you used when you saved the email to file
  699. - to decode the file on a PC, it depends on what uudecode software you're
  700.   using so read the documentation that came with the software
  701. - transfer the file to your PC and there you have it, the file you want
  702. - remember to transfer in BINARY mode if you've already UUDECODED the
  703.   file back to its binary format in UNIX!

  715. unpack.pl        - a perl tool for unpacking the encoded file
  716. 00Index.ALL      - the full index for the GUS archive
  717. (or "index gus") - instead of "send", the "index" commands also gives
  718.                    you the index of the GUS archive

  804. We're the makers of Power Chords. It would be disastrous for us if GUS owners circumvent the distribution of disks through Advan
  805. ced Gravis for a number of reasons.
  806.  
  807. 1) We get paid a royalty for each copy of Power Chords for UltraSound that
  808. Gravis ships. If you don't send in your registration card and get the software
  809. from a friend or FTP site, we don't get paid.
  810.  
  811. 2) If you don't send in your reg. card, you don't get the upgrade flyer that
  812. is included with the disks. This is a lot of revenue for us. But you might not
  813. upgrade or buy other products if you don't know they are available.
  814.  
  815. 3) If you don't send in your reg. card, we have no record of you. The list of
  816. GUS customers is part of our deal with Gravis. If you're not on it, we cant
  817. market upgrades, other products of interest etc. to you.
  818.  
  819. 4) It's illegal to copy Power Chords and distribute it. 
  820.  
  821. Please do us a favor and make Gravis fulfil their commitment to their
  822. customers. I am very upset with the way this has been handled, and all the
  823. delays, gaffes (mismatched icons, misspelling our product name in their
  824. adversising) etc.
